Contour 1.1

WHAT HI-FI?, December 1999 Buying Guide

For:
Highly enjoyable, musical presentation; bags of bass; great looks and build
Against:
Not as revealing as the best at this price
Verdict:
A fine package, similar in musical style to other Dynaudios

Dynaudlo’s recently-introduced Audience range has been such a success it’s easy to forget the company’s other designs, like the cute lis we have here.

Considering their diminutive size, the birds-eye maple veneered Contours — you can get them for £880 with a different finish — astound, delivering a weighty presentation that'll knock your socks off. Positioned 60cm from the rear wall, and firing straight ahead, soundstaging is accurate, and the delivery cohesive and peppy, yet there’s also an extra dollop of refinement over the Audience range.

Underpinning the presentation is the staggering amount of bass produced from the 15cm, mid/bass driver. Whether you're playing the dub basslines of Massive Attack, or the rousing rhythms of Holsts Mars suite, the compact Dynaudios play everything flung at them in a big, bold manner. High frequencies are equally enthralling, being neither overly sweet nor too hard on the ear.
