Contour 1.3 MKII
Rating: 5 Gold Stars, 1998 Highly Recommended Award Winner In 1998, we gave the contour 1.3 Mkiis a Highly Recommended Award. While their construction and finish are of the high standard you'd expect at the price, it was their amazing sound that won them our accolade. Much of their ability is thanks to the drive units which are of in-house design. There's the 17cm mid/bass driver, with the cone and cap of its dust cap molded as one, and the 28mm soft-dome tweeter. Sensitivity is 86dB/W/m, while an apparently tricky 4ohm impedance is made easier to drive by a crossover designed to keep this impedance constant. Despite the Contour's skills, it may not be love at first listen - their midrange is perhaps a little too laid-back to fully grab from the off. But the more you listen the more they reward, with an effortless yet engaging balance that feels just right. Treble is clean and forthright yet never too upfront, while bass is as substantial as you could wish from average-sized standmounters. |
